Emirates placed an order worth $6B for 15 additional Airbus (OTCPK:EADSF) (OTCPK:EADSY) A350-900 jets on Thursday, providing a mild boost for the European planemaker in an otherwise disappointing showing at the Dubai Air Show.
Earlier this week, Emirates President Tim Clark said the carrier would not place a large order for Airbus (OTCPK:EADSF) (OTCPK:EADSY) A350 aircraft due to concerns about Rolls-Royce’s (OTCPK:RYCEF) (OTCPK:RYCEY) Trent XWB-97 engines; the 900 series aircraft has a different engine.
The Emirates order came after the airline and sister carrier FlyDubai purchased $63B worth of aircraft from Boeing (BA) at the start of the weeklong show.
The order lifts Emirates’ total A350 order book to 65 aircraft; the first A350 is expected to join its fleet in August 2024, with deliveries stretching until early 2028.
Airbus (OTCPK:EADSF) (OTCPK:EADSY) has discontinued its double-decker A380, which is one of the main workhorses of Emirates’ fleet.
